Comparing "The Taming Of The Shrew" to "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers" For this project I picked the movie "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" to realate to our book "The Taming Of The Shrew". In S.B.F.S.B, the main characters I will focus on are Adam and his 6 brothers. Adam, the eldest of seven brothers, goes to town to get a wife. He convinces Milly to marry him that same day. They return to his backwoods home. When the other brother's saw Adam's "prize", they were anxious to get wives of their own. In the T.O.T.S, my main focus is on Pertuchio, the man who successfully tamed the shrew, Katherine. In contrast of both of these characters from different movies, the thing they have in common is how they treated their wives after the wed. This relates to Male ideas on courtship, how the brothers believe its easy to get a wife, you just have to wed her. Pertuchio got his wife by a bet and was only a wingman for the main prize, Bianca. In the movie they end up kidnapping their future wives and bringing them back to the branch. These characters are similiar because of the way they claimed their women, and what they did after courting. But in some parts of the movie, it does demonstrate contrast with my thesis, the females of the movie had their own idea on courtship and shows it to them in different hobbies the brothers never tried, like cooking and cleaning, to get the woman they love.

(87-89) This is when Pertuchio and Katherine were arguing in her room. The thing that stood out to me was when he said women are made to bear. The only thing womena are good for is to have children. Maybe that is the only reason why he wed her, to have some kind of possesion and an heir. In Pertuchio's head, that was the idea of courting, wed her and recline in bed. Those lines relate to this scene in the movie when thte 6 other brothers decide to get wives of their own. Not necessarily to love but to call of their own.
In this scene, Adam is talking to his brothers about how to get a wife. He explained how easy it was to get Milly, but the other brothers found it difficult. So then they open into a song about stealing the woman you want. "Them a woman was sobbin', sobbin', sobbin'. Fit to be tied. Ev'ry muscle was throbbin', throbbin'. From that riotous ride. Oh they cried and kissed and kissed and cried. All over that Roman countryside. So don't forget that when you're takin' a bride. Sobbin' fit to be tied" (Sobbin Woman). This scene reminds me of Pertuchio's how explained to catch a girl, in the beginning he sweet talked Katherine, but didn't accept any backtalk. Both characters know it was a bad thing to do, but it solved the problem of being single, besides the ladies secretly enjoyed it.

In these two quotes, it shows how some women in the book had control over their men, like Bianca. Pertuchio decided to make a bet, seeing on which wife would come first when she is called. Katherine was the only wife to come immediately, showing loyalty. But with Bianca she showed more courage to her husband, saying she's busy. Female courting could be like having respect for the woman and man in the relationship, also having the power and respect. Bianca shows this but not coming.
The picture above is an ideal of how Milly and her sisters wanted her husband to be. She imagine them to cook and clean and read, so she decided to turn hem into her ideal man. In the beginning of the movie she expressed how she wanted to be court as well."Goin' courtin', goin' courtin'. If you find it hard to break the ice. Goin' courtin', goin' courtin'. Here's a little feminine advice. Roll your eyes and heave a little sigh. Grunt and groan like you're about to die. That is what's known as emotin' goin' courtin'!" (Goin' Courtin'). Instead of guys having their way, it's like a game for the females. And in the end, the men sucked it all in and fell into their trap of batting eyelashes and sighing heavily. In the end of the movie, the brothers slept outside in the barn because of their bad behavior (also the ladies kicked them out their house). It wa like going through a discharge for brothers, waiting for the spring to wed the Milly's sisters."Didn't make plans to sleep with you, cuddle up by your ear. Wanted to smell perfume and not smell beer. But we gotta make it through the winter, or we won't get lovin' in the spring. We gotta make it make it through the winter or Millie says we won't get a doggone thing." (We Gotta Make It Through The Winter). She had them on a tight leash, but Milly was determine to turn those red necks into fine gentlemen for her sisters. In the Taming Of THe Shrew, Bianca shows this kind of courage at then end of the play when she decided not to Lucentio when he called, losing the bet. This shows that there has to be a 50/50 relationship in Bianca's life, as well as Milly and her 6 sisters.
